The Ditty Bag is mostly canvas and leather construction, the motif of the bag’s exterior has a structural component. Rope work has been stitched between the leather and canvas, acting as a ribbing – stiffening the bag for holding tools upright and to protect the stitching from chafing.
D-rings are re-enforced with hand stitching for hanging or lashing down securely in multiple configurations for easy access while under way.
Exterior stitching is 40 lb test, waxed polyester thread.

Both decorative and functional, the custom ropework on our Ditty Bags has been precisely tied to exacting standards. The knots used as well as their positioning has been carefully planned out and tested in order to best serve their individual purposes.
Turk’s Head knots protect and secure while adding extra grip on the handle and Star Plate. Manrope knots are used extensively to finish lines cleanly and lock lines into place. Mathew Walker knots serve to secure the lines to the wooden handle while their strands are further secured by a Turk’s Head knot.
All of the eyelets have been finished with grommets and worked with hitches. This ensures a smooth action when opening and closing the Ditty Bag. The rope sliding stopper is a Turks Head which has been finished with a short splice to ensure that it can’t come untied during repeated use.
A Back Splice and an Eye Splice are used to create a lashing line to keep your Tool Roll securely closed. This is a simple and elegant solution which allows you to include as many or as few tools in your kit as you like.
Teak has long been the seaman’s choice for it’s strength and durability, all of our Teak is selected from ethically sourced timber to ensure that Teak timber is around for future generations to enjoy. Our matched three piece sets are turned on a lathe to exact specifications before being hand carved and finished in our studio. Wherever possible the three pieces have been made from the same timber blank to ensure continuity in wood grain and colour.
Hand carved in wax and cast in Alpaca bronze our hardware is unique to the Swain Legacy brand. Every detail has been meticulously thought out and executed to perfection.
Each Ditty Bag incorporates six D-ring attachment points, three positioned around the base of the bag and three around the top. Enough options to allow the bag to be securely lashed or hung in any situation, and in any position. A seventh and larger D-ring finishes off the ditty’s handle along with Swain’s custom carved, Alpaca bronze, piece of eight.
The tool roll stows inside the Ditty Bag. It has loops and pockets that fit most small hand tools used for rope work, leather craft, sail repair and carving. (Look closely, a lot more work went into crafting this roll than one would expect.)
Wings above and below the tools fold in when rolling to keep tools safely stowed.
The tool roll is not only a fast way to access your gear but when everything has it’s place it is easy to know when something important is missing.
